Neuron 3D Modeling and Animating
Using references from Neuromorpho.org, I modeled some of the primary neuron types in the human hippocampus in ZBrush. I then animated their action potentials in Autodesk Maya and composited the animations in Adobe After Effects.
ZSpheres
ZSpheres is a feature that is unique to ZBrush which uses series of spheres to allow users to model organic 3D objects. This project allowed me to expand on the knowledge I gained on ZSpheres in the cell modeling project. After converting the ZSphere neuron models to a mesh, I used the brush and smoothening tools to meticulously sculpt the neurons’ dendrites and axon. I paid close attention to the size of the dendrites versus the axon, and made sure that the dendrites tapered in size.

Action Potential Playblast
To create the sample action potentials of each neuron, I created motion paths following each dendrite and assigned a round light to them. Each of the lights begin moving at the same frame. They also arrive at the same point on the neuron’s soma at the same frame. Starting at the frame after the lights appear to converge at the soma, one new light follows a motion path down the length of the neuron’s axon.
Basket Neuron
Basket Neurons are relay interneurons in the stratum moleculare which target the dendrites of pyramidal cells.

GABAergic Neuron
GABAergic neurons are interneurons located in CA1. They are the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the Central Nervous System. They reduce neuron excitability.
